Rhinoplasty is an elective cosmetic surgery performed to reshape a person’s nose, usually to correct a crooked or misshapen nose. The procedure can also improve breathing problems caused by a deviated septum or nasal polyps.
There are two different ways rhinoplasty can be performed, depending on the individual’s specific presentation. No matter the method, no visible scars will remain once the area has healed. However, the healing process can take some time. During that time, the nose may continue to look crooked.
Let’s go over a few common questions individuals ask when they have a crooked nose after rhinoplasty.
Why is my nose crooked after rhinoplasty?
Directly following surgery, your nose will look crooked due to swelling. This is most prevalent during the first 1-2 weeks after surgery. Not every change made during surgery will be noticeable right away. For example, if you had changes made to the width or a bump removed, you might notice those changes right away. However, the other features, like the alignment, may not become noticeable until later in the healing processes when the swelling has dissipated, and the features have become less tight.
How long will my nose look crooked after rhinoplasty?
The most common question patients ask about their crooked nose after rhinoplasties is, “How long will my nose look like this?” This is a good question because many people want to know how quickly their nose will straighten out and heal. But there is no simple answer to this question. It depends on several factors.
Individuals who have thicker skin or are more prone to bruising may require longer to heal. Of course, the more dramatic the reconstruction, the longer the healing processes. In addition, if the individual requires a revisional surgery, this will also add to the healing time. Generally speaking, your nose will be in its final shape about 3-4 months after surgery.
Are noses asymmetrical after rhinoplasty?
While some individuals may need revisional surgery, in many cases, if a nose looks asymmetrical directly following surgery, it is usually due to asymmetrical swelling. This does not occur in every individual, but it is no cause for alarm. Swelling, whether asymmetrical or not, is a common part of the healing process. It typically occurs within the first two weeks following surgery.
What causes uneven nostrils after rhinoplasty?
Uneven nostrils following rhinoplasty are a common occurrence. This is also due to swelling of the nasal features and will subside after a couple of weeks.
What to expect after treatment for a crooked nose
During the first week following rhinoplasty, you’ll notice swelling, redness, and tightness in the area. You may also notice some bruising. Your surgeon will remove the healing splint during the first week, but the healing process is far from over.
By week four or six, you’ll see noticeable changes in the shape and function of your nose. Most of the swelling will have subsided. Your surgeon may recommend injections to “fine-tune” the shape.
After 3-4 months, the healing will be nearly complete. You won’t notice many changes at this point if any at all.
